Structura chimică generală a cefalosporinelor
Cefalosporinele alcătuiesc o clasă de antibiotice beta-lactamice care au fost izolate iniţial din specii de fungi din genul Acremonium, denumit în trecut "Cephalosporium". Împreună cu cefamicinele, alcătuiesc clasa cefemelor. Au fost descoperite în 1945 şi au fost comercializate pentru prima dată în anul 1964.

  Ciuperca Cephalosporium acremonium care a initiat prima sursă de cefalosporine a fost izolată de Brotzu în mare, lângă apele de canalizare de pe coasta Sardiniei. Ciuperca sardă a fost verificată să conțină 3 antibiotice definite: cefalosporina P (activă împotriva gram-pozitivă), cefalosporina N (activă împotriva gram-pozitivă și gram-negativă) și cefalosporina C (mai puțin puternică decât cea anterioară, dar cu aceeași activitate antimicrobiană).
